When we have older computers and there is not an appropriate solution to be able to work with these computers. You've two options; hardware upgradation or might find a lightweight version of the operating system. Lubuntu is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu 10.04 and uses the LXDE desktop, a lightweight desktop environment that make this distribution one of the lighter in the market, allowing use on older computers or with few resources.

I tested it on Pentium III with 256 MB of RAM and it was installed in about 20 minutes. Lubuntu does not incorporate some typical programs such as OpenOffice and Firefox, instead opts for AbiWord, Gnumeric, Osmo and ePDFViewer as Office applications and Chromium as a browser, to better manage the computer hardware resources.

This distribution also includes Lubuntu Netbook mode with the navigation tabs to organize the different sections of the applications which are divided into: Internet, where you will find applications to do with the web browser, IM, torrent client etc. Work tab, where your will find all office applications, Gnumeric, AbiWord, Osmo and ePDFViewer etc. Play tab, where you will find all applications related to Media. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to call it Media. In Preferences tab, you can control all system configuration options.

Ultimately an appropriate operating system for old poor equipments. The minimum requirements are comparable to Windows 98 with 128 MB of RAM and a Pentium II processor would be enough to move this operating system with ease. It is clear that it won't do miracles, but will be fine on a system that we can use for basic Office work, Internet etc.

I was pleasantly surprised and quite liked the Netbook mode, which give us a different from the traditional desktop as an alternative. I also like the way to manage start-up login, where it allows us to start with the default LXDE desktop or with Lubuntu Netbook mode.
